Maya Memories
I was inspired by study tours to magical Mayan sites where soaring pyramids and temples rise above the canopy of the humid rain forest, where lianas encroach and amazing wildlife abounds.
This is an imaginary limestone stela using the name glyphs for the seven studied Mayan centres. I have attempted to capture the essence of carved stones worn away by caressing hands, acid rain, tree roots and looters’ cuts. When the great civilisation collapsed, buildings and sculptures were abandoned to nature and their disintegration and erosion hold a forlorn and haunting beauty for me. Cotton. Free machine quilting. Discharge printing and fabric painting. Appliqué. Back |
