Uncharted territory made me think of the uncharted journey I was going to go through as my lymphoma progressed. I spent some time looking at lymphoma cells, but these did not inspire me. Instead, I decided to combine the letters of ‘Uncharted’ and lymphoma in an interesting design. The voile represents the slides used to study the cells. The leaves of the quilted background are the lymphoma cells as they gradually advance through my body. Thinking of them as beautiful leaves makes them less scary!
This quilt is made of four layers, from back to front: cotton, Thermore wadding, voile and cotton. My idea was to cut back the wadding and cotton, revealing the voile. Although I would have preferred to use a black wadding, it seemed too risky when it came to this cutting back. The finished piece is painted, and edged with silver and black braid which was applied by hand. Machine quilting completed it.
