To be read from the bottom up, my wall hanging uses symbolism to represent a journey through life, using the psychologist Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. It begins with the moment of conception. This new person is equipped with their own unique combination of genes (ACGT) acquired from their parents and ancestors. Along with the external constructs of place/environment and the people/society that any individual could find themselves in, a huge variety of life circumstances is possible – all uncharted and unknown, as this person seeks to fulfil their needs.
Double-sided adhesive was used for the glassware in the romantic scene, with a little dab of talc on the topside so that it is not sticky anymore. Sharpie pens were used for the bananas and to write the ACGT letters, after I had constructed a template to make sure that all letters were exactly positioned horizontally and vertically. Hand stitching for fine details such as the rose and pineapple. Glue alone to hold the appliquéd flames down and fly the flag. Types of fabrics used were chosen as they depicted the image or colour that I wanted. Multicoloured embroidery thread for the triskele.
