During the summer of 2021, I realised that some bees had taken up residence in my compost bin. They had white bottoms so were bumblebees. One side of my garden became out of bounds because they were so grumpy. On the other side was my cabbage patch where an amazing crop of poppies unexpectedly sprouted up on which the bees feasted. So my quilt is a homage to nature, to the bounty which made its journey into uncharted territory and landed in my garden.
I had intended to use improv piecing throughout but the effect seemed rather flat. Meanwhile, as the summer passed, my veg/poppy patch grew into a tangled mess and this affected my thinking process as regards the challenge. It came down to one word – ‘texture’. Front: improv piecing, rough edge appliqué, cords, machine and hand embroidery, fabric paint. Back: hexagons, machine embroidery, fabric paint. Whole: machine and hand quilting.
