WINGS OF ANGELS
Inspiration
Words of one of the poems on the coverlet is the inspiration for the quilt. "When on the wings of angels borne, They to the saviour fly". The Maltese crosses represent the souls flying to heaven. The background is dark in the bottom left representing earth, graduating to white in the top right.
This, together with the angel, is overlain with organza to represent heaven. The size and depth of colour of the crosses reduce as they swirl up to heaven.
The fabrics used loosely resemble both the colours and floral nature of those in the coverlet.
Materials and techniques
Commercial cotton, some overdyed with fibre reactive dyes
Organza, cotton lace, edged with silver foil
Free machine quilting
Machine applique
