Inspiration
My inspiration came from a holiday photograph of a tile which was only a quarter circle. I loved the pattern and colour and could see it as a whole plate. I completed the circle and enlarged it and cut it up to represent a broken plate.
I wanted the quilting to represent movement and shattering on a tiled floor.
Materials and techniques
I have used white cotton poplin for the top and backing. I painted the pattern on with thickened procion dye
I used the trapunto technique for the shapes. Stitching around the blue before cutting away the excess wadding and sandwiching the top, wadding and backing together.
I then stitched around the full shapes with a triple machine stitch. I completed the pattern on the plate with a hand embroidery stem stitch.
The background was machine quilted, using a triple straight stitch for the long lines before free machine quilting the background.
The quilt was piped and bound.
