Fernandina
In April 2009 I watched a volcanic splatter cone erupting on Fernandina, one of the islands in the Galapagos group. A plume of molten lava was thrown high into the air. It flowed down through the old lave fields before reappearing as it tumbled into the sea at points along the coast.
After nightfall the view was even more dramatic. The plume glowed a fiery vermilion against the dark, rugged backdrop of the rest of the island; bright patches of lava broke up the darkness of the shore and the whole effect was reflected in the sea. When I read about the Breakthrough challenge, I knew my entry would be based on the memory of the immense forces I had seen breaking through the earth's crust. Scraps of commercial and hand dyed fabrics free machine stitched into place, with a small amount of hand quilting. Back |
