WISHING
Inspiration
I have been making small stitched pieces with fabrics cut from my father's ties which I saved when he died. Many of the ties contained a heavy interlining, the perfect base for machine embellishing and with a shape that reminded me of arrow heads. As lockdown stretched on, I was thinking about all the people I hadn't been able to see and all the places I hadn't been able to go. Wishing I was there or they were here...this piece is my quilted signpost to what I have missed the most during 2020's lockdown.
Materials and techniques
Mostly cotton, with some linens, silk velvet and synthetics, all offcuts from other work or cut from old clothes. Pieced black background with appliqued coloured panels, needle felted on a machine embellisher over backings cut from tie interlinings. The coloured text is bonded applique using synthetic sheers. Machine quilted. The black and white text was marked on the reverse and stitched from the back in a variegated thread.
